About this department
The Road Transportation Department is mandated to provide safe, efficient, effective, reliable, and market-driven passenger and freight operations that best meet the needs of customers and support government strategies for economic and social development. It administers the Road Transportation Act No. 5 of 2007 and the Road Traffic Acts, regulates the transportation industry through a permit system, conducts motor vehicle roadworthiness testing, administers the Road Transportation Board, tests and licenses learner drivers, and promotes road safety. Guiding legislation includes the Road Traffic Act of 2007, Road Transportation Act of 2007, and Road Safety Act of 1983.
Functions
Responsibilities
- Conduct motor vehicle roadworthiness testing upon ownership changes
- Issue fitness certificates for public service vehicles every six months
- Administer Road Transportation Board secretarial services and permit issuance
- Enforce the Road Transportation Act No. 5 of 2007 and Road Traffic Acts
- Test and license learner drivers
- Promote road safety for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians
- Compile road transport statistics
